The first years of school are too important to rush.

At CST, Lower Primary is deliberately designed around how young children actually learn. Rather than separating the world into disconnected subjects from the very beginning, we first build the foundations that every future success depends upon: language, literacy, numeracy, curiosity, confidence and positive learning habits.

Our goal during these years is not simply to teach children facts. It is to help them become confident learners who enjoy asking questions, solving problems and discovering new ideas.

The Programme

A programme built for young learners

Every day begins with an uninterrupted, 120-minute Literacy Block, giving children the time they need to become confident readers, writers and communicators. English develops through a carefully structured combination of oral language, phonics, guided reading, read-alouds and writing. For most children, English is developed through our dedicated English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pathway, supported by Oxford Let’s Go, Jolly Phonics and the WIDA English Language Development Standards. At CST, English proficiency is not expected before enrolment; it is an outcome of the programme.

Mathematics follows Maths — No Problem!, a Singapore-style mastery approach built on exploration and understanding rather than memorisation alone. Children work with concrete materials before progressing to pictures and abstract concepts, ensuring they understand why mathematics works, not simply how to calculate.

Science and the humanities are introduced through an integrated Inquiry programme. At this age, children naturally experience the world as one connected whole, so they investigate real questions, explore themes and make discoveries rather than studying isolated subjects.

Russian Language begins in Kindergarten, the first step in the trilingual pathway that every CST student grows up with. Alongside the academic programme, children also enjoy music, visual arts, drama, physical education, health, computing and library experiences, allowing them to grow intellectually, creatively, physically and socially. In Kindergarten, the day still makes room for rest, play and routine, because young children learn best when they feel secure.

How They Learn

Learning through guidance and discovery

Young children need both structure and exploration. Our teachers provide explicit instruction when children are building essential knowledge and skills, while also creating opportunities to investigate, create, discuss and apply their learning through meaningful activities.

Two teachers in every room

Every classroom is led by a Homeroom Teacher supported by a Co-Teacher, allowing for small-group instruction, differentiation and individual attention throughout the day.

03
Assessment

Measuring growth, not simply grades

In Lower Primary, learning is assessed differently, because young children develop at different rates. Rather than formal examinations or percentage grades, teachers build a rich picture of each child’s progress through observations, portfolios, developmental milestones, classroom work and teacher narratives.

Parents receive detailed feedback about academic development, English language growth, learning behaviours and personal development, helping them understand not only where their child is today, but also how they are progressing.
